Google Chromebooks with Kindergarten

The junior high science teacher asked to use the computer lab when a kindergarten class was scheduled.  With the mobile cart of Google Chromebooks available, I decided to give it a try.

The Chromebooks loaded in less than 10 seconds.  After the teacher's aide and I got the students on the school webpage, they navigated to my page with websites to choose from and they were off!

The students had so much fun and handled the Chromebooks very well...for the most part!  A couple of them accidentally dropped them on the floor.  Thankfully they didn't have far to fall and the floor was carpeted.  We'll need to work on holding them properly next time.  :)

As I'm typing this blog, I'm finding apps for the Chromebook that I can use with the younger students:
  1. Carrotsticks
  2. MeeGenius
  3. Kidoz.tv
  4. PBS Kids Play
  5. Scootpad
Looking forward to finding more!

Trip to Chile

My husband had the amazing experience of visiting Chile through his work.  While he was there we were fortunate to skype with him with the 3 hour time difference.  He was able to talk with 6th, 1st and 5th graders.

The 6th graders learned about the capital, Santiago, and 1/3 of the country's population lives there (about 6 million).   The 1st graders were intrigued about the Pacific Ocean asking what it looked like and what fish live in it.  The 5th graders enjoyed learning about the Andes Mountains and how large and vast they are.  He was able to share some pictures of Santiago and the vineyards near the Capital.

A Glimpse Around the World November Theme: Lunchboxes

The Global Classroom Project hosts, "A Glimpse Around the World" where every month students and teachers vote on a theme to show what it's like in their school or community. November's theme is School Lunch!

Lunch at our school is broken into 4 groups:  grades PreK-1, 2-3, 4-5, and 6-8.  The students in 2nd grade are participating in this project and I took pictures of their lunchboxes and what they had for lunch on a typical day.

Almost every day, students bring their lunches.

Although there's a lunchroom, there isn't daily hot lunch.

Once a month, our school has "hot lunch day" where the Home and School Association orders hot meals from local restaurants/fast food places like McDonalds, Burger King, and Hey Hot Dog!

Students have the option to bring their own drinks or order milk (one kind).

A student's lunch typically has fruits, sandwiches, yogurt, chips, and snacks.

Sometimes they bring hot soups and foods in a thermos.

The students were also able to see lunches from different places:

Please reply with either your definition of PASSION or tell us what YOUR passion is!  We'd love to hear from you!

We Tried Vegemite!

8th grader trying Vegemite

After Miss W and Davo came to visit, they left a tube of Vegemite to try.  Vegemite is a common spread people from Australia use over toast and crackers.  It looks like chocolate, smells like gravy, and tastes salty and creamy!  The students in Kindergarten, 4th, 5th, and 8th grade tried it on Friday.  Most liked it!

Mr. Davo and His Travels to the United States

The 8th graders and I are enjoying reading and commenting on the blog from Mr. Davo (the tasmanian devil) and Miss W and their travels from Australia to the United States.  They have begun in California and are working their way east.  Soon they will visit our area and we'll be able to meet and visit with them.

I was a little concerned that the 8th graders will not understand that a real person will actually visit us, but they are very excited to see Miss W and Mr. Davo and are writing very thoughtful and intuitive comments on their blog.

We  hope to make their visit exciting and welcoming!   Safe travels!

Introductions and More Commenting Practice

In the next few weeks, the 8th graders will be writing introductions for our three classes of Quadbloggers in England.  They will add their introductions on a Google Doc and I'll add it to this blog when complete.

They will also be practicing commenting skills with classes from the Blogging Challenge.  I've chosen 7/8th grade blogs so they can comment with students about the same age:

Learning to Comment and Read Blogs

The 8th graders spent some time the past few weeks learning how to read a blog and to properly comment.  The blogs we spent time commenting are:

I am very impressed by the way the students are commenting.  Some are receiving responses so they need to go back this week and read their responses to possibly reply.

I have also been in contact with our Quadblog group.  We will be sharing introductions soon along with our first topic.

These are our quadbloggers teachers and their blogs:

Ms. Simpkin http://pipkinzoo.edublogs.org/
Ms. Cox http://theflyingmemo.blogspot.com/
Mr. Stacey  http://olchfa.org.uk/blogs/quadblogging/

Happy School Year!

Welcome back!
It's great to be back to school!  The students are refreshed and eager to learn!

At this time I'm introducing our 8th graders to the blogging world.  We are part of the student blogging challenge the next weeks and they are also going to be quadbloggers!
  • Student Blogging Challenge:  Students are taught proper commenting skills and comment on participating blogs.  This challenge will continue through the Fall.
  • Quadblogging:  4 groups of blogs communicate on a common theme.  One class/group poses a question and the other 3 answer.  This will go through Christmas!

Last year's 4th graders are Mystery State Skyping and learning about the Moon with students from our area and China:
  • Mystery Skyping:  Students will create clues about their state.  They will skype with other classes to guess their state using the clues.  Students can have certain jobs - note takers and researchers.  Then they guess the mystery state at the end!
  • Moon Over Us:  Students research the moon and observe it by taking pictures at least 3 days in a row.  They create a page for their photos and notes about what they observed.  They comment on 2 USA pages and 2 pages made from Chinese students.
Looking forward to an amazing year!
